Metrology training is improving at ASO-SEM, (the Continuous Education Centre run by Ankara Chamber of Industry), thanks to their new video measuring system iNEXIV VMA-4540 from Nikon Industrial Metrology. Karfo Endustriyel, headquartered in Istanbul, supplied the equipment. Karfo is the sole distributor of Nikon Metrology products in the Turkish market.
ASO-SEM offers practical and vocational metrology training for people wanting to become quality control engineers, technicians, or learn more about industrial metrology. They also offer courses including milling and turning, plastic injection moulding, industrial automation, and electrical engineering.
The facility previously had conventional metrology equipment and a CNC coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with touch trigger probing to teach inspection techniques. Mindful that non-contact inspection is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its high-speed, high-level data acquisition, and in particular, the ability to examine fragile components without damage, ASO-SEM researched the market for a video measuring machine. They chose the iNEXIV VMA4540 with AutoMeasure software through Karfo Endustriyel. One of the major deciding factors was Nikon’s extensive range of inspection equipment. ASO-SEM gain greater flexibility in the future, as they can add more equipment or retrofit measuring microscopes and laser scanners to their existing CMM.
Practical features
The iNEXIV VMA4540, with XYZ strokes of 450 x 400 x 200 mm, and has a working volume of 400 x 400 x 166 mm when purchased with the optional Renishaw® TP20 touch probe. Touch probes enable an operator to take measurements where vision probes or vision auto-focus cannot be used. This is useful for measuring dimensions and angles of non-visible features, such as holes in the side of a component. All these features make it valuable for many industries, including electronics and telecommunications, medical, watchmaking, and household goods manufacture.
Another notable feature of the iNEXIV VMA is the long working distance of 73.5 mm. This means operators can determine depths where height variation is large, such as on high bosses and in fine, deep holes.
Nikon’s AutoMeasure software allows operators to create, edit, run inspection programmes, and collect data. Users can set up the menu-driven graphical interface to suit the skill level of the operator, from advanced programmer to the technician on the shop floor.

ASO-SEM is an 8,800 square metre education centre that delivers theoretical and practical training to around 1200 people every year in groups of 12 to 16 in nine classrooms, nine workshops and laboratories, and two computer rooms. The centre even has accommodation for 92 people who live too far away to travel daily.
Karfo Endustriyel is also using the training facility to demonstrate Nikon Industrial Metrology equipment in operation. Prospective customers in Ankara and the east of the country now avoid the five-hour drive to Karfo’s centre in Istanbul.
