Recently, we spoke to Charly Philippe, Territory Sales Manager within the Microscopy Business Unit Europe, about his responsibilities and his expertise on the industrial microscopy.
- Could you please tell us your responsibilities within Nikon Microscopy Business Unit, Europe?
I am responsible for the development of microscope sales in the south of France.

Charly Philippe at a recent exhibition, with one of Nikon’s Stereo Microscopes. - What are the best parts of your job?
Getting to meet old and new Nikon Microscope users everyday. - Any anecdote that you would like to share with our readers?
A customer who bought his microscope before I was born called me to ask for a new lens to upgrade it, he was still using it after 40 years.
- How important is artificial intelligence to the microscopy business?
It depends on the application, if we are talking about a visual quality inspection, AI is not relevant now, as the quality of Nikon’s optics doesn’t need calculation. On the other hand, some specific applications such as particles counting or metallic grain size analysis can be and are already made faster and improved by AI. - Why is Automated Microscopy so important to our modern-day customer?
Automation brings rapidity, repeatability, allows to work in difficult environments or with samples that should not be touched. With those aspects in mind and many more, it seems obvious that automation is a must in many industries.
A Nikon ECLIPSE LV100 NDA LED, one of the microscopes with the option to automate work processes. - What sectors & industries can benefit from using these solutions and why?
A few examples are companies dealing with sensitive electronic devices, chemical products or very accurate measurements.
- Why does Nikon talk about software first in developing customer solutions?
Our optics have been among the best in the world for a century now, it doesn’t mean that we should stop working on it. But it does mean that our best way to further customize our systems to cater to our ever-evolving customers’ needs is through software.
- What is the best thing about Nikon Microscopy Solutions?
Nikon has a solution for everyone, from a 1:1 scale to the best resolution you can physically get with white light. And those solutions are ever upgradable and made to last.
