Upcoming X-ray CT system launches this year
The ongoing unveiling by Nikon’s Industrial Metrology Business Unit (https://industry.nikon.com) of its next generation of X-ray CT (computed tomography) inspection solutions will see the introduction of two further new systems during this year. Within a medium size cabinet, the VOXLS 30 C 450 and VOXLS 30 M 450 deliver up to 450kV and 450 watts of continuous X-ray power, which is very high for a microfocus system and enables highly efficient examination of samples including those that are thick and dense.
Dr Andrew Mathers, X-ray and CT Product Manager said, “These new 30-series additions build on the design of our recently launched VOXLS 40 C 450 large-volume X-ray CT system. They are equipped with Nikon’s 450kV microfocus source and unique rotating reflection target technology. The combination delivers industry-leading power for ultra-high resolution imaging, enabling even the smallest defects inside large or dense objects to be identified quickly and easily. These solutions are therefore aimed at industrial inspection applications, such as quality control of components like lithium-ion battery modules, metal additively manufactured (3D-printed) parts, aerospace turbine blades and automotive castings.”
A mechanically and thermally stable, metrology-grade, granite-based manipulator and rigid steel towers together with the use of high quality motors and encoders enable precise, repeatable measurements to be made throughout the full scan volume. As with other cabinets in the next generation series, a manipulator-interlocked glass door allows the operator a clear view into the enclosure for accurately positioning a component with the inner radiation doors open. These motorised safety doors are bi-parting to allow fast opening or closing within six seconds, enabling fast sample exchange in a production environment. The redesigned cabinet exterior has a sleek, contemporary appearance, instantly recognizable as a Nikon product, consistent for use in a modern quality control environment.
Two variants are available. The VOXLS 30 C 450 is ideal for inspecting tall samples such as a large turbine blade. The VOXLS 30 M 450 is defined by its ability to be equipped with an internal autoloader for holding multiple samples. They may be scanned without operator intervention, freeing up personnel for other duties and facilitating unattended operation overnight and at the weekend, resulting in a big increase in productivity. In combination with external robotic handling and the Nikon Automation OPC UA Interface, both systems are compatible with fully automatic, closed-loop inspection at high speed in a Quality 4.0 production line environment.
Breaking news: Nikon Corporation has just announced that its subsidiary Nikon Americas Inc (“NAI”) has started the procedures for the acquisition of Avonix Imaging, LLC, USA, based in Minnesota, which will make Avonix a subsidiary of NAI.
This move will reinforce our position as market leader and greatly enhance our ability to deliver best-in-class, next-generation inspection solutions. The full press announcement can be seen here: www.nikon.com/company/news
